The Dark Beat with Dilby

If you love all things deep, grooving and twisted this column is your guide to the smoke-filled dance floors of the best underground nights across Aotearoa. If you want your event featured hit me on facebook.com/dilbydj.

Auckland witnessed Antix /Fiord, Tim Richards, Murmur, Matt Drake and more turn it out at SonikTonik. Deep as Funk on the 28th then featured AlexBull, Dan Wilkies, Logan Baker, Soane and others with underground house and techno.

Mid-May saw Sandwiches host a new night What Happened to the Techno?, featuring the full spectrum of deep and tech house, minimal, and of course lots of techno! The club was rammed from the get-go and it was clear no one wanted to leave at 6am. Wellington veteran Coda was a highlight playing killer techno classics through to cutting-edge bombs!

As for this month, Santé (Berlin) is coming through Wellington for a night of tech goodness on Friday 24 June. Santé releases on Souvenir Music, run by Tiefschwarz (for whom he has co-produced many tracks). His tracks have been signed to compilations by Ministry of Sound and Steve Lawler’s Lights Out – Decade CD. This will be an intimate affair with only 100 tickets available. Check out dashtickets.co.nz for ticket details.

PSYMON BARNET
City: Christchurch/Dunedin
Style: Deep Minimal to Chunky Tech- House and Techno
Media: facebook.com/psymonb

Let me introduce a stalwart of the Canterbury scene, Psymon Barnet. Psymon walks the line between club smashing kingpin and barefoot festival madman with understated groove and tune selection aimed straight at the dance floor! He is a must see DJ. A firm favourite on the Southern festival circuit, playing all of the big dates each season (‘Alien Nation’, ‘Autumn Equinox’, ‘Luminate’, ‘Voyage’ and many more). He also manages to have his finger in the pie of ‘KILL!CLUB’, a regular minimal and techno night, which has been damaging sub woofers and setting benchmarks for five years now.
